Manual Sophos Endpoint install causes loss of all browsing privileges

Hi All,

We have a (very) remote user, who we're trying to roll out the Endpoint client to. Rolling out from the SEC console failed, it just kept saying that the install could not start. So we tried a manual install, by connecting to the user's machine and browsing to the setup program directly. The Endpoint installed (finally) after a couple of hours (it was being downloaded at 300kpbs, sadly), and this morning, the user complained that they could not access ANY websites. Sure enough, we connected, and tested google.com, which was instantly blocked and said search engines were blocked by our web policy. This is not the case, and we have verified this.

Can anyone help, please?

Kind regards

Dave

  • Hello Dave,

AFAIK the search engines category is only available with Full Web Control (and the policy is configured on the appliance). Do you use Full Web Control (i.e. do you have a WSA)?

  • Hi Christian,

Yes, we have a WSA. I've solved the issue now, it seems. The user didn't have a specific additional policy assigned to them (so they should've been using the default policy, right? But I know they weren't, as search engines category definitely isn't blocked in our default policy), so I created a policy and assigned their AD group to it. After a while, browsing started working. I guess the very slow internet speeds in South Africa were somehow hindering the updating of policies on the Endpoint of the remote user (we're in the UK). I'm baffled as to why the Endpoint didn't just use the default policy in the first instance, though?

    Thanks

  • Hello Dave,

I have no experience with the WSA, therefore I can't say what could have caused this and how it's supposed to work in this configuration. Dunno if you'd get a more helpful response in the Gateway forum.
