PLEASE HELP! Sophos Enterprise Console 5.0 Installation Failed

Dear all,

Could any one out there help me on my issue?

I have Sophos Enterpise Console 5.0 and trying to install it on Window Server 2008 R2 Datacenter. it is joined to DC.

I am getting this error message a the last step of Installation, says that " Unable to install Database " .

After that when i go and try to launch the Enterprise Console, i am just getting this below error message and cannot launch the SEC.

Management server connection failed

Could not connect to the Management server.

This may be due to one of the Followin:

- Local network problems

- Management service has stopped on the server

- Your database service has stopped

- A firewall is blocking the connection

- The management service is not installed on the server.

Either attempt to reconnect or close the application. Attempting to reconnect may take a few minutes.

Then there are two button to Reconnect and Exist.

Hope to see your help .

Thanks & Regards,

Yan

  • HI,

Enterprise Console, has 3 main components/layers to it.

    1. The databases (stored in SQL Server)
    2. The management server components
    3. The console (Enterprise Console itself)

The Enterprise Console (3) connects to the management server components (2) and the management server components connect to the database (1).

The error you mention suggests the console can not find the managment server component.  The main management server component is the "Sophos Management Service" service.   This will fail to start if the database cannot be found or is unable to access them in anyway or they haven't been upgraded, etc..  So it's a knock on effect, they all need to be working for Enterprise Console to open.

When you perform the installation, after the pre-checks are performed (.NET 3.5 SP1, Windows Installer 4.5, etc.) If you don't provide you own SQL instance for the software to use, in Enterprise Console 5.0 it will install a SOPHOS named instance of SQL Server 2008 SP1.   You could create this yourself using the Microsoft installer, SEC 5.0 also officially supports SQL Server 2008 R2 as a free addition.

With SQL installed, the first component to be installed is the Sophos Database Component.

    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/116768.aspx

described roughly what this install performs.  Either way, you should end up with the databases of a SEC 5.0 installation.  A list of databases per version can be found here:http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/17323.aspx

Then it installs the server role, this is the part that installs the "middle layer", i.e. the backend services such as the Sophos Managment Service.

Finally the 3rd component is the Console.

The bootstrap log details the execution of all steps. If the database are failing to be installed that is the problem than needs to be addressed first.

    Regards,

    Jak
