Ubuntu 12.10 On access scanning

Hi,

We upgraded our ubuntu to 12.10 not realising that this would cause problems with Sophos on access scanning. We can not enable the on access scanning. The Log shows: Unable to load Talpa modules. Uninstalling and reinstalling Sophos Anti Virus did not help.

I have read the instructions at http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/13503.aspx, but although I have the kernel source, system map and GCC installed, it still does not work.

I tried /opt/sophos-av/engine/talpa_select select as mentioned at /search?q= 21701 but this fails with exc-configure-failed.

I also had problems with the sophos web GUI not working, but this was resolved by changing the file permissions for the system map.

Any help in resolving this would be much appreciated.

  • Unfortunately the shipping version of Talpa only supports kernels up to 3.2, whereas Ubuntu 12.10 uses 3.5.

Your best bet is to ask to be put on the SAV9 open beta, and then enable fanotify for on-access scanning.

Alternatively you could ask Sophos Support for a override Talpa source pack with more kernel support.

Or you could wait till Talpa 1.14.0 is released, with support for more recent kernels.
