No System Icon or Update Options?

i am running a server with the Sophos Control Center and we had the recent updater issues.

On a couple of machines I have tried to reinstall and it looks as if Sohps Endpoint Security and Control installs but there are no update options and there is no system tray icon allowing me to update.

If I look in the services I can see that Sophos Autoupdate service is running.

I have tried to reinstall from the CID's faulter (setup.exe) and after I enter the credentials it is as if closes and does nothing at all.

  • If you have tried to reinstall the installer is probably frozen. My colleague tried to reinstall by using the protect computers option from SEC and this caused more issues to be honest.

To fix i went to task manager and end task any msiexec processes (on the affected server), if they keep reappearing make sure you end task them again and again until it stops.

Stop the sophos service to disable on access scanning.

Run the vbscript that restores the update files, depending on your on access scanning setting it is a different fix script.

Once you have done that restore the icon by running the C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\ALMon.exe.

Start the sophos services. Then run an update from the systray icon.

There was one server that had a corrupted install due to the this problem. After following the above steps i still could not start the update service. So I restart the agent service then pushed out the installer again and watched it reinstall. It worked after that.
