Sophos update from 9.5 to 10.0 has stopped exchange backup running on Windows SBS 2003/2008

Following an upgrade on to 2 seperate Windows servers one running SBS 2003 and the other running SBS 2008 the Windws server backup is failing with a shadow copy errror on the exchange data store. This is urgent as both servers now have no backup. I posted this message here because the award winning help line is not answering my call. Has anybody got any tips.

On a few of our Windows Servers (2000, 2003, 2008), after the upgrade to v10 we had to reboot them to get them working again. Unknown what caused Sophos to hang or why the resources of the server were being eaten up, it was difficult to remote into them.
In regards to Exchange though, MIcrosoft recommends excluding them from AV scanning:
