Suggested SQL maintenance tasks on SOPHOS45 DB?

Hi,

We've been experiencing a few issues with SEC and I was advised that this could be due to the lack of maintenance tasks on our SOPHOS45 DB.

We have a remote SQL 2005 SP2 server (SQL Server 9.0.3080), with the SOPHOS45 database running alongside other DB's in the DEFAULT instance.

At the moment we don't perform any maintenance tasks on the SOPHOS45 DB and wondered what (if any) are the official Sophos documented recommendations for the SQL maintenance tasks on the SOPHOS45 DB, and if any what order these should be performed in?

If there are no official documented recommendations then what tasks does the community run and in what order, how frequent etc.

Numbers wise we are talking sub 200 clients. Currently our SOPHOS45  DB is 58Mb and the logs are 290MB. Both located on seperate drives, etc..

Thanks,

John

  • Hello John,

the number of clients is small, sizes are reasonable - can't imagine it's the SOPHOS45 database. My SOPHOS4 database was on a local default instance alongside other more than moderately used databases and I had no issues with 2500+ clients. There are some articles on performance (search for database performance), the one about autoshrink and autoclose and the one about log size have been mentioned in this forum. But as I said - with the numbers you gave it's hard to imagine that the SOPHOS45 database is the cause.

What are these "issues"? With 200 clients I don't expect that you run many remote consoles at the same time.

  • Hi yah QC,

We have two issues at the moment:

    1. The Sophos Management Service fails now and then. We have up to 5 consoles running at one time. (1 on a plasma monitoring the whole estate, 2 used for day-to-day ops on internal systems, and another 2 used by a team that manage an external sub estate). Although most of the time we'll have 2 or 3 running at any one given time.

    2. Machines stuck in the computers with errors section in SEC. - We basically have a handful of machines that had errors which were cleared, however after a reboot of the clients, reboot of the server, running PURGEDB, etc, the machines are still stuck in the computers with errors section.

Both have support cases open, both have been suggested that the database is the cause due to lack of maintenance tasks.

Thus the reasons for the question on suggested SQL maintenance tasks. Since my post I found the following online article: http://www.networkworld.com/subnets/microsoft/110107-ch8-sql-server.html?page=3 and have set some maintenance tasks to run on Sunday evening.

We'll see how this pans out on Monday I guess.

    Thanks,

    John

  • Well the Management service has't failed for a while now, but I can't confirm that this is due to the SQL maintenance tasks.

However the problem with the end-points being stuck in the errors section is still there. I've now had my case moved from the US support office to the UK office under a new case ID.

I'm still concered about the order of the maintenance tasls as I've heard that an incorrect order of SQL maintenance tasks can have a negative effect on some database's.

When I asked Sophos about the official recommended maintenance tasks for the SOPHOS45 DB I was advised to run the following:

    Backup Database

    Check Database Integrity

    Shrink Database
    Reorganise Index
    Rebuild Index
    Update Statistics

However I'm still unsure about the ORDER these tasks should  be run in. Sophos could not enlighten me either.

    Thanks,

    John

  • Hi,

If I remember correctly and I might not :), the wizard that you can use to create a maintenance plan asks if you want to run these as separate tasks or as one.  If you choose to do it as a single task I would think the wizard would set them up in the most appropriate order.  It's really a generic database tasks and not specific to Sophos products so I would suggest let the wizard do his thing. :)

    Thanks,

    Jak
