Accidentally downloading a .exe file

Hello:

On a website I accidentally downloaded a .exe file. Unfortunately, Chrome downloaded it automatically without asking me for permission. I have since changed those default settings.

Anyways, I did a scan of the file and Sophos found no threats.

Here's my question:

If one downloads a .exe file by accident on a Mac, but never installs it and deletes the file, is there any chance of contracting a virus/trojan?

Thank you,

OceanDream

  • Since .exe files are compiled for Windows only it cannot hurt your Mac - unless it gets across in to a Windows boot camp partition or if you run a virtulization program that host a Windows operating system.  Just mentioning these for complete information an awareness.

Without sending a sample to SophosLabs we'll never know exactly what the file is and what it attempts to do.

If it is a true Windows executable and you only have a Mac OS X then you should be fine.
