query on updates for endpoints

I have a few questions I am trying to find answers to.

If a endpoint client is downloading the updates from the update maanger and the client computer is turned off does it resume updates from where it left off or does it start from scratch again?

If you want to control a roll out of updates (say the April 15th upgrade to 10.3.7) do you have to set the "recomended" sub to 'Previous Recommended' before April 15th or before April ? (Article http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120492.aspx)

How do others go about updating - do you test the updates first on select computers before rolling out to the entire estate?

thank you

  • Hello ch1981,

does it resume updates from where it left off

guess not. AutoUpdate compares its local cache to the CID to determine which files need to be downloaded. During download it builds a new cache which after successful completion replaces the old one.

If you want to control a roll out

Do not rely on an exact date. While the packages are usually not available before the from date (note that the actual roll-out is "spread" over several days) the time zones come into play. And the advisory says: before April. Subscribing to Previous Recommended results in a Major Install (actually it's a "downgrade" to VDL4.67).

do you test the updates first

Some definitely (have to) do. But if you don't perform serious tests you have two options: go with the pack Recommended (which is not un-fieldtested anyway) or be cautious and select Previous.
