Laptop hanging on auto-update when first switched on

Hi all,

One of my laptop users has been having issues with his laptop taking a long time to perform an auto-update first thing in the morning. Generally for the first 15 minutes the user cannot carry on working until the update completes. Outlook seems to freeze and other applications hang. The laptop is fairly old, but has plenty of memory and hard drive space.

I've copied and pasted a snippet of the autoupdate log and it does seem to show the process hanging (from start to finish it takes 20 minutes):

Hi Christian, thanks for your speedy response.
Updates throughout the day seem ok and not causing a performance hit on the machine. A later update cycle shows the process being much quicker (although I guess there is less definitions to download than say first thing Monday morning after the weekend):

I will test by delaying the morning update by disabling the autoupdate service and letting everything settle down for 10 minutes before re-enabling the service. The laptop is an XP client and therefore I can't set the service to be on a delayed startup. I guess other things like a little house keeping, defrag, stopping unneeded start-up programs, disk indexing etc might speed things up a little.
