Renames are slow on network shares

A new problem has recently become prevalent with Windows 7 users trying to save Word and Excel documents on network shares - results in delays of 60 seconds or more even for small files (few kilobytes).

Turns out the underlying problem is that Sophos doesn't like it when a file is renamed over the network. Strangely, this occurs even when on-access scanning, behaviour monitoring and web protection etc. are turned off.

The only resolution is to stop the Sophos Anti-virus service in the service console - obviously this is not ideal as the machine is then unprotected.

Note that this problem only occurs for network file renames, local renames are fine. Also, only a few users experience this problem, the majority is ok.

Has anyone seen this before, or know of possible causes?

Thanks
