Time Machine backups freezing Mac OSX

Hi All,

I wanted to share a solution for a problem that had me puzzled for days, when I was starting Time machine backups, it would hang about 200-300MB into the job.

It turned out to he caused by the fact that I had scan network files enabled on my Sophos AV for Mac client.

Disabling that resolved the issue straight away.

Hello Max,
you're probably talking about the Home Edition. Did you take a look at SophosFreeTalk ? There's a number of threads about Sophos and Time Machine.

Nope, using paid version (under MSP).

Hello Max,
I see. Can't find an appropriate knowledgebase article - so you might want to take this to Support even though the forum likely (can't tell as I'm not a Mac user, at least the one I have access to does not run TM) has some useful information.

Reason I posted this is to share the problem and solution with everyone else, issue is resolved if I disable network scanning (which typically we would turn off under Windows installations anyway) so we are happy with this work around.
