Sophos Mobile for Android comments/questions.

Very nice app.  The locate and lock feature is fantastic - but I have some comments/questions:

I tried to install it on my Nexus 7 - but not having SMS capability - it gave me a big warning that the locate feature woudl not work.  It would be nice if there were another way to activate the locate/lock option for such devices as it does have GPS.  Perhaps via e-mail or via a website and your security module pings the site every hour or so.

I'd like to see other triggers for the locate option.  Sort of like a burglar alarm.  For instance if too many incorrect attemps are made to unlock a phone, it can send an SMS with location and number failed attempts.

It might also be nice to have the option of sending a photo from the front and/or back facing cameras in such circumstances.

i've not tried the lock functionality - mainly because I can't see in the doc how to UNLOCK the phone.  What happens to the phone when it is locked, and how does one go about unlocking it?    Is there a 'wipe' option - or will that be reserved for the enterprise edition of this app?

When testing this app against a Samsung Ace, I saw some odd behaviour.  It may well be a GPS issue on the phone, but worth mentioning.

First locate said it could not give the location and gave the cell id and area code.  Fair enough - it may not have been in range of a wifi network, or GPS signal

A second SMS came about 10 minutes later with a location - but it was a half a mile out.

I sent a second locate request, and it too came back right away with the same incorrect location about half a mile out, then a few minutes later came with another location which was the correct one.

sent a third request 30 minutes later - and gone a reply with the correct location.  Again, then a second reply a few minutes later with the same correct location.

Does each location request send two SMS's?  If so what are their purpose as they are labeled the same.

So does the app first send a cached location - then once it has a more accurate location sends a new SMS with the new data?  If so, it might be nice to have this mentioned in the SMS sent - i.e. tell us if it is a cached location response, or an accurate one - and also if the location came from GPS or from WIFI (not sure if this is possible).  Or perhaps send an SMS to say the request was received - last recorded location was xxxx.  When the CURRENT location is found (fresh GPS data) another  SMS is sent stating this is the _current_ location.

Overall a great app though - well done!

  • Hi Aris,

I am member of the engineering team. Thanks again for giving us such detailed feedback. Here some comments to the other points you mentioned:

    • The lock command locks the screen with the standard lock screen of the Android device. This is the same screen that appears when locking the screen via the standard device button or - when defined via the settings- that appears after the defined period of time. So it is the same pattern / pin /... as defined in the settings dialog for the lock functionality of the device to unlock the device. No need for an unlock command.
    • Concerning the locate function  - yes we send 2 SMS. The first SMS returns the best retrievable position after a shorter period of time (1 Minute) and the second SMS contains the position after a longer period of time (with hopefully a more precise position). For the next release we have reworked the way of determining the position so we have improvements here.
    • Furthermore you are absolutely right concerning the documentation in the text messages - we will provide more specific information (is the position from WLAN,... ) in the next release and we will update the documentation in the info-activity so that we better describe how the specific commands work

Many thanks again for your valuable feedback!
