Pushing Sophos endpoint on windows 2000

Currently we're using Esset NOD32 as antivirus in our company. But we're going to change that.

So far i've installed Sophos endpoint on a windows 2008R2 server. This is used now as a testing environment, but will be put into production environment next month. Pushing the antivirus to WIndows 7 clients isn't a problem.

But due to some legacy problems at my environment, I installed a new Windows 2000 Server. But I can't get the Sophos software installed on it (as client).

The error it gives is: 80070721   The installation could not be started: A security package specific error occured. The computer may need additional configuration before installation. See knowledgebase article 29287.

The article hasn't helped me and google is also unwilling.

Can anyone help me with this?

  • Hello Jroes,

I assume you have SEC5.1 and also your W2k is at least at SP3. Which components did you try to install?

Anyway, as this is not a typical action but rather - if I understood you correctly - a one-time task I'd just attempt to install manually (i.e. browse to the CID from the W2k server and run setup.exe).

  • Reading your answer made me reailze that I hadn't updated it yet.

I installed service pack 4 on it, and then it worked.

Now the sophos enterprise console keeps telling me that the windows 2000 machine isn't up to date. (And I can't find any other updates for it)

It's quite annoying to see a computer with an error and I'd rather fix it then disable it.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Hello Jroes,

the up-to-dateness in SEC refers to SESC (or "Sophos Anti-Virus") not Windows. If it says "not since" then the machine hasn't downloaded/applied the latest updates (check if there's also a warning about a required restart).

  • Thanks for the fast reply, but maybe I should have been a bit more specific.

The error message is: "Patch assessment requires Microsoft Windows Update. You must restart the computer after installing Microsoft Windows Update to enable patch assessment"

Apperantly it has the error code "a0010002"

I did a restart and it didn't changed anything.

"Automatic Updates', which was installed with SP 4, is configured and actif.

  • Hello Jroes,

I assume that with SP4 Microsoft Update (as opposed to Windows Update) should have been installed. There should be an icon named Microsoft Update (target muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite) in the start menu (the previous Windows Update might also exist, the shortcut points to wupdmgr.exe). I'm not sure what PA checks - it might look for wuauclt.exe and its version (which must be at least 7.2.6001.788 - current version is 7.6.7600.256).

The platform requirements state that Patch is supported for 2000 SP4 (except SBS) - and I'd assume the message would be different in case of an incompatibility - thus if it doesn't work although the components seem to be there you should give Support a call.
