Monthly Scan request

Hello,

I can find no way to scheule a full scan on a monthly basis in our enviroment (as opposed to weekly, daily, at a specfic time) from with the Sophos Enterprise Console version 5.0.0.8.  I figured my next best option would be to create a Windows Scheduled task to execute the scan a desireed. However I don't know what agruements to run against SavMain.exe (or any other .exe in the installation directory since there are no assosicated help command on the executables.  Is there a method of choice for executing a scan on this timtable?

  • Most people tend to want a week scan or even more frequent.  Not many people want to stretch out the scan intervals and hence the product has not got the UI buttons (in the central policy nor locally) to configure a monthly scan.

The 'monthly scan' question does get asked from time to time and the best sort of answer is to schedule backgroundscanclient.exe (not SavMain.exe - that's just the GUI for the application and nothing relating to running a scan).

...it should give you a start - it does provide a command you can schedule.  FYI: backgroundscanclient.exe needs a GUID parameter (found in machine.xml).  The one shown in the thread linked above is the default.

When you start wanting to customize the monthly scan, that's when things will not work well.  You can create a customized scan in the console so you have everything how you like it however the task will be created on the endpoint, and obviously then that's (at most) a weekly scheduled scan.  In task scheduler you can disable the weekly scan and the computer shouldn't show 'differs from policy' warning message in the console.  But if you comply the SAV policy from the console to the endpoint the weekly scan will be activated again.

You may also want to read about sav32cli.

    Hope the above helps.
