Sophos installation, return code 15

Having a couple issues with installing sophos version 10.

Here is the output in the Sophos ES setup file:

4/18/2012,1:43:28 PM,Information,Verified that contents of CID C:\Users\*****\AppData\Local\Temp\sophosa match the manifest file,

4/18/2012,1:43:28 PM,Information,Searching for third-party security software.,

4/18/2012,1:43:33 PM,Information,Return Code 15 from third-party security software removal tool.,

4/18/2012,1:43:33 PM,ERROR,Cancelled removal of third-party security software and installation of Sophos software. The software being removed may include a firewall or other component that is not being replaced. Make sure the package you are installing provides equivalent protection to the package being removed.,

I have so far been unable to determine what a code 15 means.

This is an hp netbook running windows 7 home premium, 32 bit, and currently has no antivirus or firewall.  It did have sophos version 7 before.  My take on the error message is that the installer has a problem with either a standard windows component or the previously installed antivirus.

Can anyone explain what a code 15 is?

  • Still haven't figured out exactly what the code 15 means, but I've solved the original problem of trying to install sophos 10.  Norton Internet Security had not uninstalled cleanly.

I tried using CCleaner to remove all the references in the registry, however this still left behind an entry in control panel->programs->uninstall a program.  After removing that entry, by attempting to uninstall Norton which brings up a helpful dialog, sophos installed just fine.

This would have been easier to diagnose with an error message that states what specific 3rd party application was causing problems, instead of just a generic error code.
