Updating Sophos on SBS 2008 client PCs without internet access

Hello.

I am looking for advice on how I might go about setting up Sophos on a group of client PCs to a SBS 2008 machine that does not have internet access (nor do the client PCs) and keep them up to date.

There will be internet access in the building but it will not be at all possible to give the server internet access.

Is there a solution to what I am looking for?

Thanks,

Ian

  • Hello Ian,

search this board for "air gap". The threads discuss various aspects and possible scenarios. Please do come back - whether you've found a feasible solution or have additional questions.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply, Christian.

I have had a read through the air gap method and it seems to be the solution.

I have a few questions, if I may: Would it require that I have a server with access to the internet to get the CIDs and Warehouse file from it? And every time I want to update the server/client PCs , I would need to copy the contents of the CID and Warehouse file?

  • Hello Ian,

to make sure I understood you correctly: you have a small standalone network with SBS 2008 and a number of PCs?

Would it require that I have a server with access to the internet to get the CIDs and Warehouse file from it?

it is not necessary that server is running a server-grade OS, minimum is Windows 7 Enterprise (see Supported Platforms for Sophos products). The CID is created/updated by the SUM so you just need to copy the warehouse.

The setup is outlined in Installing and configuring an air gap with Sophos Update Manager. Your non-air-gapped network would be a Window 7 with SEC installed from which you copy the Warehouse. You'd choose option 1 (i.e. install SEC on the SBS). Once you've performed all the steps you'd copy the Warehouse from the Win7 to the SBS whenever you want to update your network.
