Temp Setup

Hi,

I will like to know if I have couple of Win XP and Macintosh clients on a subnet that does not have Internet access only, can I setup to be able to do the following.

 1. Able to get a definitions updates from a Server Share (\\ServerA\VirusDefinitions)

 2. Not using a SEC as the current hardware is not ready.

Why I asking this question is the hardware for the SEC is not ready yet. I am on a test server which I have instruction not to use the SEC to "push" the updates to the client.

I thinking of copying the virus definition files to the server shares on a daily basis, thus the client is able to get the updates there via the primary location.

Anyone can advise?

  • Hello Jase,

AutoUpdate on the clients expects the location (CID) to be in a specific format. The files there are indexed and checksummed in a catalog and the client determines that updates are available by comparing the CID's catalog to the one in its cache and if there are differences it takes the appropriate actions. This is to make to download both efficient and reliable. There is no mechanism for definitions (IDEs) updates alone.

Just to understand what you are about to do. You have already have Sophos in your shop (and a SEC running) or are you starting with it? Please give us some details - what's already there (or not), how you deployed (if you did) and where existing clients (if any) are updating from. Also why (and how) you'd want to install on the endpoints before the server is ready.

  • Hi Christian,

I do have SEC running but is on a test server. The actual hardware for the server is not ready thus I planning to let the clients connect direct to the Internet for updates. This can be easily resolves as I can point the client to Sophos directly.

Unfortunatelly I do have a subnet that does not connect to the internet. This segment does have access to a particular server.

What I wanted is a temporary method for these computers (both Macintosh and XP) in this subnet to be able to receive antivirus definitions from the server.

    Is there a way?

  • Hello Jase,

AutoUpdate only works with a CID. So if you want to distribute new definitions to the clients without a CID (which could be "off -line") you'd have to load and apply either manually or using a script on the client.
