Uninstalling Sophos is not working...

I've had Sophos for about 2 years now through my school, and am literally 8 days away from finishing.

No more than two days ago, I noticed the icon for the shortcut of Sophos was missing - it was just that default windows icon for an executable program now.

So, I decided I would just uninstall it in case something was wrong and since I was about to graduate from school.  I came to this website and followed the instructions to uninstall it (http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/12360.html).  I uninstalled Alupdate.exe first, just as the instructions said to do, successfully.  Then when I tried to uninstall the anti-virus component, Error 3005 came up saying I did not have Administrator rights to uninstall Sophos.

So I checked the administrator group for Sophos, turns out I do have rights, so I don't know what's going on.

As of now, Sophos anti-virus and remote management system are still installed, but there is no icon in the tray to indicate Sophos is running (even after restaring my laptop), yet I can still access the actual program from the icon on the desktop.  Only Savservice, exe is running, no Almon.exe or anything else Sophos-related.

I would like to remove this program, but I don't know what to do  (I know more than the average person about computers, but I don't feel confident changing too much or anything like that).  Please help me!

  • Hello altQ,

if you can still open the GUI View product information should tell you your Current user rights in terms of Sophos groups. The tray icon is part of Auto-Update so it's no surprise that it isn't there now. The icon in the program group is taken from an Installer item and that it is missing indicates that "something" went a little bit wrong previously (perhaps during the latest upgrade - which version do you have, BTW).
