Computers freezing for 10 minutes, SAV service threads all busy

Hi,

Starting ealier this week I had an XP computer freeze for ten minutes with the system event log filled with messages like the one in the subject, or " Scan failure (start check timestamp [ 1ce2185dcb56d0c]) filename continues: "...olume2\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NTDLL.DLL", " To avoid filling up the system event log, "Savservice threads busy" and similar messages will not be logged until after the service has recovered again"

As of today I have three systems exhibiting this behavior and have disabled all Sophos services on them to prevent the freezing. I have only directly witnessed one of them and it showed a minimized window with title like "update.exe 3%". Shutting off the computer and restarting allowed it to function for a few minutes before the freeze happened again. Waiting the ten minutes allows the user to continue.

I found similar problems in the past by searching online but no posted solutions - any idea how to fix this?

[Update] My colleague tells me there are several other PCs exhibiting the same symptons.

Thanks
