Enterprise Console upgrade

Hi,

I'm new here so please bear with me :smileywink:

I'm doing some work for my local primary school which currently has Sophos Enterprise Console 3.1 installed on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller (the only server on the network).  All the clients have SAV 7.6.13.  So, all very out of date.

I have been tasked with installing a new server for them which is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and has become an additional domain controller within the existing W2K3 domain.  All the Operations Master roles have been switched across to the new DC and I'd now like to rebuild the "old" W2K3 server as it's in a bit of a mess.

So, I need to rebuild the W2K3 server that currently has SEC 3.1 on it and I could do with some advice from those in the know.  Now seems like as good a time as any to upgrade everything to the latest versions so what order do I do this in?  I will be rebuilding the server, still with W2K3 (R2) and the same IP address, but with a different host name.  Am I best off just doing the rebuild and installing the latest version of SEC from scratch and then deploying out the latest SAV version to all the clients?  Will the SAV deployment upgrade all the clients automatically or do I have to do some cleanup first?

All advice/opinions greatly appreciated.

Pete

  • Hello Pete,

good you ask before doing something you might regret later :smileywink:

First question - why are the clients still on 7.6.13?

Second question - how many clients and are they all in the domain?

First advice - visit the Upgrade Center

Second advice - export the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Certification Manager keys and keep them in a safe place

There are several scenarios and you should have at least an idea of the concepts involved. That's why I suggest the Upgrade Center.

    A few answers:

Installing from scratch means losing all you policies. If you change the hostname the clients will not know where to get their updates but RMS might "find" the management server. I expect the clients can (be) upgrade(d) from 7.6.13 but I'm not sure.

I'm certain you (will) have more questions
