Problems installing Sophos Enterprise Console

I am having trouble installing Sophos Enterprise Console on a Windows 2003 SP2 Server.

At first I thought it was lack of disk space on my C: partition but I have rebuilt the server and made 20gbytes available on C: partition and the Enterprise Console will still not install.

The pre-requisites (Installer and Microsoft.NET 3.5 SP1) seem to go on OK. After two or three restarts the Installer finally gets into installing Enterprise Console. After several minutes I get a message :

"The Wizard was interrupted before Sophos Enterprise Console could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time please run setup again".

At this stage my MS SQL / Service Manager was showing a SOPHOS database and there was a SOPHOS service showing a status of Started in "services.msc".

I re-ran the Enterprise Console Installer which failed again.

The "D:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console\DB\Install DB.log" file was reporting ...

"SQL Server does not exist or access denied".

The MS SQL / Service Manager still shows a SOPHOS database instance and there was the SOPHOS service still shows a status of Started in "services.msc".

Can anyone advise me ?

I had this working on a different Windows 2003 SP2 Server a couple of weeks ago and as far as I can tell I haven't done anything different.

  • Hi,

I would suggest going in to add/remove programs and uninstalling SQLServer and reboot.

I would then probably go to MS and get the latest version of SQL Express 2008.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=40acf55f-0715-4bb0-9735-d02fc2c8a7af&displaylang=en

Note: SQL Express 2008R2 would probaby be ok with SEC 4.5 but it's not supported until SEC 4.7 so I would suggest use SQL 2008 for now.

If you run through an install of SQL 2008, you can choose to show the advanced settings.  When you get to choose the instance name, it will default to SQLExpress, if you change this to SOPHOS, you should end up with a SOPHOS SQL instance.  If disk space is a problem you can select a different location for the data and log files during the insall. Ideally a different physical drive should be used for maximum performance.

Once you have a SOPHOS named instance you should be able to run the Sophos installer and it will use the SOPHOS instance by default.
