Unable to start Sophos Anti-Virus service

1.  We've started reusing an old RM Window Box computer while one of our newer computers is out of action.

Sophos is in the list of programs, but there is no blue shield on the task bar.

When I clicked on the program I got a message saying 'Unable to start Sophos Anti-Virus Service'.

No clue why or what to do.

I tried downloading the latest standalone version and got a message saying it was already on the system.

How do I get it to work? :smileymad:

A separate problem, the person who knew the passwords is not at school now and I cannot find any paperwork for Sophos.

It is on our other machines though, and working, including those with IE8.

How can I find out the credentials to enter if I ever get the program working? :smileysad:

Thanks.

  • This computer has been compromised my malware so that machine might now have more issues than meet the eye. Malware might have modified permissions or what else.

Anyways try the generic approach to fix Sophos fails to install/uninstall:

1.) uninstall all Sophos components (usually 3 depending what exactly) from the Add/Remove Control Panel. Don't reboot yet. If any installtion fails use the Micosoft Installer Cleanup Utility ( info here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.08.utilityspotlight.aspx ; direct download here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe )

    2.) From a command prompt run a chkdsk C: /v /f

Confirm with Y that you want to scan on next reboot

    3.) shutdown -r -t 0 (this reboots the machine)

4.) After it finished rebooting delete all Sophos instances (search Sophos) from the registry.

5.) Delete all Sophos instances from the filesystem (Search for Sophos).

    6.) Reboot again

    7.) Push/Install Sophos.

If it still fails check the EventViewer for any MSI or Sophos fails and check the logs in %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Sophos\Autoupdate\logs
