Firewall location detection does not seem to work, plus other general quesions.

Hi all.  Can anyone shed an light as to why the firewall active location stays set to primary even when a machine cannot resolve the "Primary Location"?

Firewall version is 2.5.0

Clients are running on XP Proffessional.  Endpoints are managed by one SEC.

Location is by DNS - resolving our lan SEC.  This cannot be resolved outside our network.

How does the sophos client resolve the current location. Ping?  What triggers the client to check it's location?

Oh and while I am here...what if anything should be in the SophosOnAccess group on the client?

And... does anyone know what actions the "cleanup" option actually carries out.  Meaning if we set to automaticly cleanup what actually happens.  Is the offending item simply deleted?

  • Hello sob,

location detection uses the method it says, i.e. by DNS attempts to resolve the name(s) you specified and compares the result to the address(es) specified. As far as I found out detection is triggered when an adapter becomes active (see which IIRC was written during the 9.5/SCF 2.5 Beta for details).

To emphasize - the DNS method relies on resolution and not on reachability.
