Sophos Anti-Virus Version 7 to version 9.5

Hello,

My company's IT is outsourced and the people that look after the server want £950 to perform the Sophos upgrade from version 7 to version 9.5.

Now that's fine as long as it warrants that kind of money, however - how do we know that they are not "bumping" the price up somewhat to make a bit of profit ??  Ideally I want this to roll out without any hassle, but if I can manage to do it myself, I save my company a good whack and in a world where everything is going up, we need to save where we can.

I have contacted Sophos and they have said to just download it from the website onto the server then the rest will run automatically.  Sounds easy ?? And our IT boys want £950 ?

Has anyone done this upgrade and is it worth me taking it on myself ?

Replies appreciated.

  • HI Mick

Since I don't live in the UK, it's hard to say but I have done a number of upgrades myself. The upgrade path from Sophos Enterprise Console 3.x to 4.5 requires an upgrade to 4.0 first. Additionally, the MSDE SQL will be upgraded to 2005 and then 2008 (express editions). If something does go wrong, a lot of work will be required to return your console to it's previous state.

  • So, its not just a case of following this instruction which was email from a Sophos employee:

"Please can you follow the article below which will instruct you in how to create a username for the Sophos website.

Once logged in please download Sophos Control Center version 4 and install over the top of your existing installation.

  • Hello Mick_Dundee,

is it worth me taking it on myself ?

    Depends on your salary :smileywink:.

I have no experience with SCC (especially how to back up the 2.0 configuration) but I'm sure the upgrade is not rocket science. From the price tag (assuming similar levels as over here) I glean your "IT boys" are not expecting any major obstacles. Guess £950 is "one or two days" and this includes enough leeway "just in case" - quite reasonable if one hasn't too much experience with it.

Maybe you should also ask about SCC2.0 -> SCC4 experiences in the Small Business forum.
