New Windows Shortcut Flaw: Does HIPS protects us from this?

Raising the question in regards to Microsoft''s Security Advisory (2286198) from last week.

Apparently there is a "new" method to deliver malicious content via USB drives- utilizing .lnk files and Windows Explorer; san use of AUTOPLAY/AUTORUN.

Would HIPS protection prevent this type of behavior from taking place?
