Why is SavService consuming 50% of my CPU in the middle of the day??

Can someone explain to my why the SavService is consuming 50% of my CPU during the day? There are no scheduled scans running at that time as everything is set to run at night.

Can someone please explain this to me? If it's updating, then how do I configure updating to occur only after hours or once a day??

Sorry, I was going to post a screen shot of the SavService using that much CPU but I'm not understanding why Sophos forums won't allow a simple image post from Photobucket. no matter

  • HI,

    Most likely it is either:

    • Scanning settings, scan all files, scan inside archives, etc., maybe revert to default scanning options for on-access if they are not already.
    • Problem file or files, large archive (with scan inside archives)
    • conflict with another product, e.g.. Another process is constantly updating files, causing SAV to scan them continuously.

To help identify the component, I assume disabling on-access helps? So once we know it's on-access related, I tend to fire up Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 ) and see what file operations are taking place.  Maybe try excluding within SAV on-access:

    C:\users\

    C:\Program files\

    C:\Program files (x86)\

Note: the trailing backslash is required.

Something quite high up, to narrow it down quickly, maybe could use this to add a filter in Process Monitor.  It really is a case of seeing what helps and being more specific each time as that will lead you to the problem.

    Hope it helps.

    Jak
