SCF: Weekly Connection Loss

Hi all,

Slight problem here with a laptop here running Sophos Client Firewall that hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on.  Basically, every 7 days, without fail, the machine loses Internet access a couple of minutes after it's switched on (possibly at the same time Sophos tries to update?).  I have no idea what's causing this issue, but I do know that restarting the Sophos Client Firewall service fixes the problem.

There are no weekly scheduled tasks that may be causing this problem, and every program is installed on at least one other machine without these issues.  Maybe it's some weird combination only present on this laptop???  It has the full Sophos Data Protection suite installed (Anti-virus, firewall, encryption), and if the machine is switched off on the seventh day, the problem occurs when it's next switched on.  For example, it used to happen every Wednesday morning, but then the user went on holiday (without the laptop) and returned the following Friday.  Now it's happening every Friday morning.

While it's not a great problem, she is getting slightly irritated by it and so far the only solution I can find, which I'd rather avoid, is to remove the firewall.  If anyone has any suggestions for resolving this I'd really appreciate hearing them!

Many thanks.

  • Hello QC,

Thanks for the two posts offerring assistance.  From what I've been able to tell, there doesn't appear to be anything different about the SCF service when this problem occurs - I honestly cannot (yet) see what's causing this problem.  Oddly, it's not a complete network failure, just the vast majority of it.  The user was able to report the problem to me via Lync IM (Microsoft VoIP software), but nothing else was working.  Web browsing, Sophos updating, network drives, etc... had all stopped responding.  All the IP settings (DNS, gateway, etc...) are correct at the time, and it's only through trying random things that I found restarting the SCF service fixes the problem until next week.

It's even more annoying that I can't replicate the issue on any other machine - users tend to not be very happy if I remove their machines while they're trying to work :smileyindifferent:

Thanks again for the suggestions so far - if I ever do find the solution I'll be sure to update this post just in case anyone else has the same issue.

    Edited to add the following:

While I'm convinced the problem isn't directly with SCF, I'm still wondering whether some Sophos component is triggerring it.  It just seems odd that the machine works fine for the initial minute or so until Sophos tries to update...
