Dock Icon

I looked through the manual but could not find my answer.  I have Sophos Maxc Ver 7 installed on my MacBook.  The icon is in the top menu bar and all seems OK.  The question is does the DOCK Icon have to be in the Dock showing that Sophos is running or can I quit the app?  Also I could not find anything on the top menu bar icon some times blinking?
