Recommended Scheduled check for updates SEC 5.0

In our SEC 5.0, the update manager is scheduled to check for updates from Sophos every 10 minutes.

Is this too often? or not enough?

Can anyone tell me the recommended Check for updates schedule please?

  • Hello IanL,

there are two settings: One for threat detection data updating and one for software updating, the defaults being 10 (which is also the recommended setting) and 60 minutes.

It is recommended to check for threat detection data (aka IDEs) frequently. Updates could be issued any time 24 hours a day so you should set the interval to a low value to ensure "protection against the latest threats ". The total "latency" for client updates is determined by this value and the interval in the client updating policy.

Software updating is a different matter, there is no recommendation other than that you should use the most recent (Recommended) versions as far as possible. When using a fixed version SEC will warn you once it becomes obsolete (and if configured automatically upgrade it). The maximum interval to check for software updates is one week if using a custom schedule. The check itself isn't expensive. Using a custom schedule you can request that updates are downloaded only during off-peak hours or on certain days. Note that there is no corresponding setting for the clients - i.e. you can't have different schedules for these two types of updates.
