SEC 3.1 to 4 Upgrade - SQL Question

Hi,

About to upgrade from SEC 3.1 to 4.

I have upgraded MSDE to SP4 without any problems in preparation for full upgrade to 4.

Before I proceed  I have a question re the updating process of MSDE 2000 to SQL Server 2005 Express.

I have another application on the sever using MSDE 2000. Does the v4 upgrade leave the MSDE default instance as it is? Does it then install SQL Server Express alongside the original MSDE, upgrading only the Sophos instance to SQL Server 2005?  Thus leaving the other application using MSDE  intact for the default instance and installing separately SQL Server 2005 with a Sophos instance?

Any other SQL issues that may affect other application using MSDE 2000?

Your assistance is appreciated.

Regards,

Tom

  • Hi,

Firstly MSDE and SQL Express can co-exist on the same machine.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345154(v=sql.90).aspx

"Multiple SQL Server 2005 Express installations can coexist on the same machine along with other installations of SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, or Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE)."

It sounds like you have two separate instances for the two products so you should be fine as the Sophos install will only touch the SOPHOS instance.  It only becomes a problem if they use the same SQL instance.  I would suggest it would be worth taking a backup of each database before you begin.

    Regards,
