SBS 2003 with MS SQL 2000, installing MS SQL 2008 express

Hi,

Small company running one server with SBS 2003.  At the moment we use SQL 2000 which came built into SBS 2003.

Need to install SQL 2008 express to update SECV3 to SEC4.5.

We need to continue to use SQL 2000 to run our retail system.

Can SQL 2008 express be run along side SQL 2000 on SBS 2003?

Would installing SQL 2008 express on SBS 2003 be breaching any Microsoft Licence agreement?

Thanks,

Ben

SQL Express will co-exist with SQL Server 2000:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345154(v=sql.90).aspx

Multiple SQL Server 2005 Express installations can coexist on the same machine along with other installations of SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, or Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE). In general, it is best that SQL Server 2000 instances be upgraded to Service Pack 4 (SP4). The maximum limit to the number of SQL Server Express instances is 16 on the same machine. These instances must be uniquely named for the purpose of identifying them.

All the SQL Express and MSDE versions that have gone before are all free with some limitation limitations, either size of the databases being restricted, workload governors, etc....  I don't see how it would infringe the MS license as any third party application such as Sophos can install SQL Express 2008 as part of their products. Microsoft wouldn't discourage that.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Is this the final answer? shall I proceed with installing MS SQL 2008 express?
