Problems installing Sophos Enterprise console

Hello-

           I am new to Sophos, we just purchased it.  I am trying to install the Enterprise Console on a Windows 2003 R2 server with the Database on our dedicated SQL server which is also a Windows 2003 R2 server both fully patched and the firewall is turned off.  Everything seems to install just fine until it tries to start the service and then I get an error message that the Management server connection failed.  I've tried using different accounts to access the database server and no luck.  I'm at a loss.  I've sent 2 emails to tech support and haven't not heard anything back other than they received my first email.  Any suggestions would be a great help and appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

  • Thanks for the info.  This did help me determine what the problem was.  I figured out that the regkey didn't have the Domain or username stored in it.  I also figured out that I had the instance input incorrectly.  I reinstalled everything and used the correct SQL instance and then also edited the registry with the correct credentials and it is now working.  Thank goodness sincce I have to get this rolled out asap.  Thanks again for your help.

  • Hi

    I appear to have this same problem although have run through the mention article and my upgrade status still reads as "0" even though I manually ran the command to move my data from the SOPHOS3 database to SOPHOS4.

    I'll try to explain my problem in a little more detail.

    I’’’’ve recently attempted to run the Sophos Endpoint upgrade from version 3.1 to 4.x.

    All appeared to be going well but this failed at the end and when attempting to open the Enterprise console just gave me the following message:

    Cannot open Sophos Enterprise Console.

    You cannot connect to the "management server" component on SERVERNAME, etc. This is because the management server is an earlier version or no management server exists

    The installer suggested i run the setup again which I did and although ran through different steps than the initial install steps, reported that it installed successfully however i still receive the above error when trying to open the EC.

    The Advanced button gives me the following:

    Class not registered

    ----- [outer exception] -----

       -- error: 0x80040154

       -- facility: Custom (Defined by the interface)

       at struct IUnknown *__cdecl bl::SystemEnviroment::CreateInstanceOnServer(const struct _GUID &,const struct _GUID &,class std::basic_string<wchar_t,struct std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class std::allocator<wchar_t> >)

       at void __thiscall bl::CReusingManagementServiceClientBroker::CreateCoreServices(void)

       at __thiscall bl::CReusingManagementServiceClientBroker::CReusingManagementServiceClientBroker(const class bl::CReusingManagementServiceClientBroker &)

       at void __thiscall bl::CServerBrokerRegistrar::SetBroker(const class bl::CServerBrokerBase &) throw(...)

       at int __cdecl Run(int,enum bl::ConsoleType::Type)

       at int __stdcall wWinMain(struct HINSTANCE__ *,struct HINSTANCE__ *,wchar_t *,int)

    Browsing through the install log i noticed the following:

    Property(C): SQLExpressFilesNotFoundError = The external SQL Server 2005 Express installation files could not be found.

    Property(C): SQLExpressOSRequirementsError = This computer does not meet the necessary operating system requirements.

    Which suggests that this failed due to not being able to find the 2005 Express installation files however these are present in the “sec_40” folder.

    I re-ran the setup and appear to have gotten further as this installed an SQL 2005 Express instance although failed at the end of this step. The Sophos installer then produced a log file when telling me that the installer failed.

    I attempted to run this yet again and this time seemed to go through although now get the following error when opening the EC:

    Management server connection failed

    Could not connect to the Management server. This may be due to one of the following:

    - Local network problems
    - Management service has stopped on the server
    - Your database service has stopped

    Either attempt to reconnect or close the application. Attempting the reconnect may take a few minutes.

    As mentioned I’’’’ve read through Article ID: 66028 and even after attempting to move the data from the SOPHOS3 database to the SOPHOS4 database, i still get an UpgradeStatus of “0” which I believe is the cause of the above error!?

    So as you can see i've gotten into a bit of a mess on a simple 3.1 to 4.0 upgrade and so would appreciate any help

    Cheers

  • Wow! And I thought I'm unsurpassed in messing up an installation :smileywink:

    I might comment on it later.

    As a quick reply: After an attempted migration SEC did not start on the server (but a remote console worked). Support told me that there could be issues caused by RMS and it's probably a good idea to uninstall it prior to upgrading. Well - too late. Since I had a SOPHOS3 backup I uninstalled what was there from SEC4, reinstalled SEC 3.1, restored the database, uninstalled RMS and upgraded to SEC 4.0. Sounds more complicated than it was - in fact it was pretty straightforward (I don't think I fiddled with EMLibrary)

  • Hi All

    I had this exact same problem upgrading from 3.0 to 4.0 and tried all sorts to no avail. I eventually uninstalled the RMS service, uninstalled & reinstalled Enterprise Management 4.0 (including console management service & database). Still couldn't load the console. After checking that the database SOPHOS4 existed I checked the UpgradeStatus in the UPDATES table. It was still set to 0 so I manually set the UpgradeStatus to 2 and the service started! The console is now working fine.

    Hope this helps

  • One note. Manually setting the upgrade status to 2 will result in none of the EC3 database data being transferred to the new console.
