Sophos anti-virus preventing websites like netflix form loading

I am a dental student at UAB School of Dentistry. I purchased my macbook air through the school, and it came preloaded with Sophos. Several of my classmates and I have been unable to access numerous websites from our computers while at home. For example, we can't reach netflix.com, youtube.com,microsoft.com, several apple.com sites, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, etc from home. However, these sites load fine while on the school network.

I've spent several hours talking to Apple support, and they determined that Sophos software is preventing these sites from loading.

Chrome error message: "No data received ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE"

Safari error message: "Safari can't open the page. Safari can't open the page netflix.com because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait a few minutes and try again."

I am working on macbook air OSX 10.11 El Capitan. The issue started before I updated to El Capitan. Several months ago, I had no issues logging into any website, but as time has gone on, the issue has gotten worse. At first, sites wouldn't load, but I could restart the browser a few times and it would work again. Now, none of these sites will load. It isn't the internet service because 1) my old macbook loads these sites just fine on the same network 2) I have classmates all with different routers and internet providers who are having the exact same problem.

So far I have tried doing the following (nothing has fixed the issue):
  • re-download adobe flashplayer
  • re-download microsoft silverlight
  • tried adding netflix.com to "exceptions" under "web protection" in Sophos
  • tried turning off options under "web protection" in sophos
  • tried turning off "live protection" in sophos
  • tried turning off "on-access" scanner in sophos
  • tried clearing all cookies and browsing data in chrome and safari
  • tried changing DNS server
  • tried booting computer up in safe mode: all sites load in safe mode
  • tried making new user account
  • tried restarting browsers and computer after every change, redownload, etc
One of my classmates found that if she downloaded this application called "Hola," the websites occasionally work. This application is generally used for overseas internet access according to my understanding.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not very tech savvy, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Hello LindsayMaxwell,

if it works on your school's network but not (reliably) outside you should first ask your school's IT. I'm pretty sure that out-of-the-box neither Mac OS X nor Sophos give the UAB School of Dentistry's network any special consideration.
