OS X AutoUpdate Not Updating From Network Volume

Hello

We have been running Endpoint Protection - Business on our small Mac network for many years. Our fileserver pulls updates from Sophos and places the files in a folder (Support/Sophos_Anti-Virus/ESOSX/) and the Macs on the network pull the updates from this shared folder.

I have just installed OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) on one of the Macs and with this installed Sophos Anti-Virus 9.2.8. I configured the AutoUpdate preference the same as I have for all previous installations but it always fails to update with the warning 'Could not update Sophos Anti-Virus' and 'Installer Error' and the date.

Can anyone advise me what could be causing this error please?

    Hello Chris,

    the update error is not necessarily a download error. I wonder what OS Our fileserver is and what's pulling updates. How did you install 9.2.8 on El Capitan? Details about the error should be in the install.log (open Console and on the left hand panel select the /var/log/install.log file).

    Our Fileserver is a MacPro running OS X Snow Leopard Server and Sophos Anti-Virus 9.2.8. The Fileserver is configured to autoupdate directly from Sophos. Client Macs on the network, including the Mac running El Capitan, autoupdate from this folder on the Fileserver.

    Update Location: Network Volume
    Address: afp://192.168.111.2/Support/Sophos_Anti-Virus/ESOSX/
    User Name: admin User Name
    Password: admin Password
    Proxy: Do Not Use Proxy

    I see on the log no authentication issues simply 'update failed'.

    I downloaded the Sophos installer from your support site and performed a standalone install.

    Any further suggestions would be very welcome.

    Hello Chris,

    Any further suggestions are only guesswork, sorry. I'm no Mac only network expert (not even a Mac one - and BTW it's not my support site, I'm not Sophos). AFAIK to have Macs updating from a Mac server requires required  SUM for OS X (which allegedly has been retired more than a year ago and does or did not work for SAV 9.x). In short, to my knowledge it's not supposed to work ...
