And of course you know that this alert is a false positive because this application (these paranoiacs at Sophos Labs even created a particular detection) is innocent and beneficial.

Excuse the irony sarcasm, but I wonder why you think you are qualified to make such an assessment. Labs don't write detection just for the fun of it or to make it difficult to work for the user. This isn't a generic detection (which is supposed to sometimes err) thus the detection is quite deliberate. While Adware and PUA is not outright malicious customers expect that it is detected (and the majority likely also wants it to be blocked). Thus Sophos won't remove this detection. It is possible to run such applications without completely turning off AV - but if you don't know how to do it you probably shouldn't.
