Tips for configure policy for Backup

Good morning,
I need some advice about using the sophos server, and backup issues.

Just installed, and at first backup I noticed that the system is slower than about 5-6 times before.
I'm currently using the policy base, but I think that's definitely not okay.

The biggest problem is with the fileserver, and the database. How do I recommend setting up the policy?

Thank you

  • Hello Vincenzo D'Asaro,

I'm not sure what you mean by the sophos server - you are using Central, aren't you?

    recommend setting up the policy
impossible without details. You mention the fileserver - did you protect just one server or several, which OS, how much data, and what kind of data? the database - there are many databases, SQL Server, Oracle, whatever. Last but not least, backup can be many things - the product used, its settings, the backup strategy, and the data backed up must be taken into account when suggesting certain policy settings.

So please give as many details as possible.

  • Hi Cristian,

    Yes, we use sophos central.

On all servers are virtual, and the version used is Windows Server 2008 R2.

For now I'm using as I said before, all the default settings.

For FileServer, sophos Server Protection version was used, and not the Virtual Environment Protection. As for the backup space, it is a single 1.5Tb disk and a full copy is made. Before, about 6 hours backup time, now 18 hours.

For Database, we use Oracle, sophos Server Protection version was used, and not the Virtual Environment Protection. As for the backup space, it is a single 600Gb disk and a full copy is made. Before, about 2 hours backup time, now 9 hours.

The only thing that has changed this week is the antivirus. The software that is being used is a data protector, and as I wrote over the backup time, I have increased by 3 times for fileserver, and 4 times for database.

Do you need any other information?

  • Hello Vincenzo,

full backup means that all data is read and written, and from a process running on the server? 3 times seems nevertheless excessive unless the server is then also overloaded.

Dunno if you (still) can turn off real-time protection, but even if you deselect only on write you should notice an impact. As your backup takes some time anyway it'd be better to set a process exclusion for the backup process(es).
Real-time doesn't explain the increase for the database backup though as this normally involves only a few files. Are you running the backup in parallel?
