Sophos Endpoint Security Control install fails on server

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the following issue I have on my network.

I have recently migrated our Sophos installs across to Sophos Central, to include the Sophos Endpoint Protection and the Intercept X packages.

Using the Sophos Cloud Migration Tool I have managed to migrate across the mijority of our devices and servers - apart from one.

We have a file server -Server 2008 Standard -that fails when trying to install the server client.  The message that we recieved is that it cannot connect to the internet to get the setting required.  It therfore does not download the software, the update config etc.  The process of installing does run through, and the old versions are removed and the installation completes with warning that once the internet is reconnected further updates will be downloaded. The Internet is working correctly, and has exactely the same settings as a similar server for when the install did work.

I have tried to install the software manually - by downloading the Server Protection exe file from the Sophos Central dashboard - too but with no joy.

Windows firewall is configured correctly and there are no 3rd party pieces of software that are preventing this.

Has anyone else had a similar issue?  Or are there some config files that could be changed manaually?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Andrew

  • Hello Andrew,

taking your response from the original thread: other than error relating to the internet connection - is this the error 143 and if, did you check whether you can access the URLs with a browser?

    Christian

  • Yes, I have just tested the url's that the update manager is using and I can access them through a web browser running on the same server.  It is asking fo a username and password but I would imagine this is normal.

  • Hello Andrew,

    update manager
I'm not sure what you mean by update manager as it normally refers to the component (SUM) on the management server.
Anyway the URLs taken from the bootstrap log shouldn't ask for credentials,  http://dci.sophosupd.com/ definitely doesn't. Also checked an AWS hmr.sophos.com URL (https) that returns an XML document.

    Christian

  • Yes, sorry Christian, bad wording. I should have referred to it as the Update Service on the local machine - the exe file installs the Update Agent, but then fails to configure the update agent - ie populate it with updates locations, username etc.

I must have checked the wrong url's I have rechecked and they are assessible.  I get a return of Sophos dci Site - connection successfull.

  • Hello Andrew,

so AutoUpdate is installed but not configured - is MCS also installed and if, are there any related logs?

    Christian

  • That is correct, also the MCS did install too - there is an error code of 133 in this log.

One other tstrange thing - and probably significant - is that when I unistall all Sophos products manually on the server, it causes the proxy in IE to fail, DNS queries go a bit strange and DFS root is inaccessible.  There is definately something not quite right with the server in general and in points more towards an issue with that then just the install of Sophos.  I will do some more research and see where we get to.  Thanks for the advice etc upto know.

    Andrew

  • We've the same behaviour on our 2008-Servers too.

Andrew, could you find out anything?

    BR,

    Michael

  • No, I havent managed to get too much further.  I have asked our support company to have a look and they cant see anything that could be blocking it.  I am off work at the moment, but when i return I will open a support call direct with Sophos to see what they think.

Our support team did suggest that there was something wrong with the installer, but this cant be the case as it works fine on the other servers.

  • Hi Andrew,

many thanks for your feedback. I would really appreciate if we could keep us up-to-date here.

I have opened a ticket at Sophos myself but they do not react.
