Issue: /usr/local/bin Permissions Broken (Mac)

When Sophos Cloud was updated for OS X El Capitan (10.11) they moved the binaries from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin per Apple's new security model. However Sophos Cloud also repeatedly changes the permissions on /usr/local/bin to revert them to being owned by root which breaks many third party utilities such as Homebrew. This is detailed in this post here which claims it has been resolved:

community.sophos.com/.../10029

However the mentioned 9.4.1 release doesn't seem to apply to Sophos Cloud as our instance is still on 9.3.4 and the permissions on the directory are still broken.

Anyone else still running into this or know if there's an ETA on Sophos Cloud getting fixed?

Thanks!

  • We're also experiencing this issue. As of December 9th, Support has told us that there's no estimated release for 9.4.1 on Cloud as it's still beta. Currently, the fix is to join the beta program. Unfortunately, we're not able to do that within our org so we're anxiously waiting for the update as well.

A few known bugs of the 9.4.1 version that's keeping it beta as provided by Sophos Support:

    - SophosSXLD does something to that results in an invalid NSError instance

    - Quarantine manager is not properly managing its list of threats/PUAs
What happens is that when clearing Threats from the QM, that the UI gets confused and can get into a situation where the QM is stuck and can't be launched until the SAV GUI is restarted.

  • Thanks for the reply. We followed up with support as well and as of today the only fix is still to enroll in the beta. Doh...

Though according to the beta opt-in the current beta version is 9.4.0 and not the 9.4.1 that is supposedly needed for this fix, so will have to see...
