Data Usage showing much higher on Sophos Central than on iPhone

We are testing the Telecom Expense Management for mobile devices. I set up my own iPhone. The data usage on the phone shows 28.2 MB, on the Mobile section in Sophos Central it shows as 179.66 MB. I reset both to zero this morning.

  • This is a guess but I wonder if Sophos sees multimedia content through texts or texts as data?  Could you reset and do no calls or texts for a period and then compare?

  • Thank you for the tip. I had not made any calls or sent any texts from when I reset to when I did the comparison.

  • Also isn't iphone data usage the data usage amount from when you are not connected to wifi?  i.e. cellular data...

    Are is that what you a referring too?

    Also are you seeing the data sent and received on the iPhone?

    I would also think that there is data going out or coming it that is not counted as cellular data, things your carrier uses or sells if you agreed to something in some eula, this could be location data, analytics that the cellular carrier gets paid for, etc etc.

  • Thank you again for your response. Yes, I am referring to cellular data when not connected to WiFi. The usage should show a higher amount on the phone. According to the Sophos documentation, 'Data traffic caused by installed apps is reported, but not system updates, system app updates, or similar. '

  • Hmmmm, yeah that is weird, unless there are some carrier apps that don't get counted on the iphone part because Verizon or Sprint (whoever your carrier is) does not want you to know.
