After Office 2016 upgrade to Version 1811 (Build 11029.20079 Click-to-Run), Sophos Application Control started blocking Excel, recognizing it as Office 2013. I opened a ticket with Support, spoke with the technician, uploaded the requested logs and haven't heard from them.
The workaround I am using is to allow Office 2013 in my Policies. This is a temporary and undesirable solution while waiting to hear from Sophos. The ticket was opened December 4, 2018.
