Sophos Endpoint issues after 1809 Update

My machine updated to the Windows 1809 October update yesterday and since then Sophos Update has been failing with ‘Sophos Endpoint Self Help Installer (64-bit) failed to install’

I have uninstalled Sophos Endpoint, removed the registry keys and manually removed remaining Sophos install folders, rebooted, and then reinstalled using the installer downloaded from the Central dashboard.

The installation fails with ‘Installation Failed’ and upon reboot, the same ‘Sophos Endpoint Self Help Installer (64-bit) failed to install’ error occurs every time Sophos Endpoint does an update.

If I try and run the installation manually from C:\ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\decoded\esh64\Endpoint Self Help.msi I get the following error:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.  Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Endpoint Self Help.msi' in the box below.

If I point the installer to the file I get:

The file C:\ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\decoded\esh64 is not a valid installation package for the product Sophos Endpoint Self Help.  Try to find the installation package 'Endpoint Self Help.msi' in a folder from which you can install Sophos Endpoint Self Help.

I've tried copying the same file from another machine, and to another location and it always gives the same error.

  • The two responses to the OP helped me resolved the same problem on my computer. I had installed Windows 1809 but it gave me trouble so I reverted to 1803. I did not realize that my problem with the Sophos Central install was because of that. Thank you to both of the previous responders who pointed the way for me to solve my problem.
