Post Update Reboot Notification possible?

Hello,

sometimes when there is an update failure, I start the update via Sophos Central.

Afterwards the software is requesting a reboot. But many of our workers never reboot their PCs.

Having about 1000 computers, we have considered to force a reboot at night for the PCs.

But I wondered if there was something like a reboot dialog after an update, which tells the user to restart the PC, just like Windows does for example.

On my research I came across this guide which shows how to enable this dialog, however it seems to be deprecated and doesn't work anymore (These files don't exist anymore).

Does anybody know a way, how to enable such a notification to the user?

I would like them to reboot the PC, rather than enforcing it.

Thanks.

  • Hello Calum Cowan1,

CID configuration isn't available with Central but I assume imon.cfg is still present on the endpoints so if you could by some means replace it this should enable the notification.
Please note that AFAIK (don't have Central but the on-premise SESC) this doesn't enable a Windows Installer reboot or some similar dialog (i.e. the pop-up with buttons) but merely displays a short-lived (5 seconds or so) tooltip from the icon and a tiny yellow exclamation mark overlay for 1 minute. Can't say how it behaves with Toast (Win8+).
If your users have the habit of ignoring friendly notifications it likely won't help much.

  • Hello,

    thanks for your answer.

Is the ExportConfig.exe and sauconf.xml still there as well?

I just saw the imon.cfg is still there but in ProgramData not ProgramFiles.

I think I'll have a look into this, at least they have a notification before we restart their PCs.

  • Hello enemene,

    ExportConfig.exe and sauconf.xml
the former is a tool provided with the on-premise SEC, it exports a policy from the database in xml format. The modified xml is then put into the update location. Something clearly not possible with Central.

    in ProgramData not ProgramFiles
my bad that I didn't notice it - but I have given up counting (and submitting comments on) the articles that still show legacy locations for config files. Yes, ProgramData is the place, not Program Files. For the logs as well.

  • That's too bad, so it's likely not going to work, if I want to do this for a LOT of PCs?

Indeed it would be a good idea to mark those articles as deprecated.

    Thanks for your help :)
