MS Office 2016 on Mac starts very slow

I tested this on MacBook and MacBookPRO (both 16GB ram, both purchased in past 6 months).

MS Office (word, excel, powerpoint) start maybe eeeh in 2-3 seconds, when I install Sophos Central client, everything slows down to 10sec+ start time. I tried literallly everything from disabling the services, uninstalling.. nothing helps. Its honestly very strange and I am not sure if this is related to antivirus, web blocking or disk encryption but I can reproduce this issue on pretty much every machine in our company incl. newly installed machines with no other software on it.

does anybody experience the same issue?

  • Hi Jiri Novak1,

Can you please let us know which are the exact Sophos components (and their versions) that are installed at the time the issue starts?
Also, what OS are you running?

Are you receiving any alerts or detections in Sophos Central regarding these applications?
Do other programs start without delays?

  • I noticed ths long time ago and finally tested it on 2 machines with fresh Mac install (after full reformat of hard drives).

    endpoint agent: 9.7.5
    OS: Mac 10.13

I did not notice any other apps starting slowly, it almost looks like MS Office is trying to make external call or some unusual call and after 10sec just gives up. I tried all kinds of acrobatics I found of MS forums, but no luck.

  • Hi Jiri Novak1,

Aside from the Endpoint, are there any other Sophos components installed?

And just to clarify, when you say " tried literallly everything from disabling the services, uninstalling.. nothing helps", do you mean that uninstalling Sophos does not make the issue go away? (If that's the case, then we are looking at non-Sophos related issue, but I need further clarification before I can state that).

Are there are addins/extensions installed for your Office apps? (If so, does removing them help at all?)
Did you receive any alerts on the endpoint?
