License exceeded

Hello,

Our company changed the AV solution to sophos recently, and at the moment we are very pleased with it.
But now we have an issue with the license numbers.

We bought several Endpoint Advanced licenses and server licenses.
We intalled almost all of them and have some to spare for new computers that arrive from time to time.

For some time, there were no problems, but now, sophos central tells me that we have exceeded the license limit, witch is false.
If i go to the "devices" option, i can clearly count all endpoints and servers and see that we still have licenses to spare.
I contacted sophos support but they didn´t understand the problem and told me that it was a policy issue, that i had some advanced policy settings that required an advanced license, witch i have. All of our licenses are advanced.

Just another detail, this started happening since an interceptX trial has expired. I think it has nothing to do with the case because the trial was activated by mistake and was never user in any computer.

Does anyone have this issue?

Thanks for the support,

  • Just a small update.

After googling some more it looks like it may be because almost all pc´s here use DHCP.
When the ip changes the system logs it as a new license in use, witch is false, from what i could gather the systems flushes the IP´s in use every 7 weeks.
I will try to change all computers to static IP´s and let you know if it works.

Edit: The system should work with MAC adresses to prevent this issue.

    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Hi Marc Lomba,

Please check out the KBA on How license usage is calculated and reported in the Sophos Central Admin Dashboard to see if any of this could be causing the excessive license count.

License usage for most license types is calculated by user.

    1. The customer has a user with one device, deleting either the user or the device or both will drop the license usage by 1 immediately.

    2. The customer has a user with a device connected 30+ days ago will not count towards usage.
(License usage updates normally happen in seconds though may take up to 4 hours in some scenarios)

    3. Example: If you have one device that multiple users log in to.
If user 1 logs into this computer, usage will be 1 for this user.
If user 1 logs off, usage is still 1 for user 1.
If user 2 logs into this computer, the overall usage will remain at 1.
User 1 immediately stops counting towards license usage, user 2 immediately uses 1 license.

    4. You can see a good representation of which users are taking up licenses by running a "user" report from within the 'Logs and Reports' section. Those users who have been 'Online' within the last 30 days will register a user license. Note that users may take up one or more different license types, depending upon what system/products they are using.

    5. Note: The introduction of Terminal Server licensing (March 2018) will also factor into your endpoint license usage if you have Terminal Service protected in your environment. Users who log in to a TS server that do not have Sophos installed locally will use an additional Endpoint license. Please see KBA 127299 for more information.
