Spotlight not working with Sophos

Sophos Antivirus seems to be impacting on Spotlight searches - causing them to slow considerably (taking > 1 minute to respond to Spotlight searches). I thought there was an issue with Spotlight and spent several hours reindexing, reinstalling OS X with the assistance of Apple Support. We noted from Activity Monitor that Intercheck was taking up > 80% CPU. We stopped Sophos scanning and the problem was resolved immediately and I have now uninstalled Sophos. Is this a known issue?
As background, I recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro from a MacBook Air and migrated using TimeMachine backup, I had no issues on the MacBook Air and I now have a high spec MacBook Pro. Could installing from the Timemachine backup have caused this issue and would reinstalling Sophos resolve?
For info, am running 10.9.4, have 8GB RAM, 1TB SSD drive and a 3GHz i7
