Sophos AV 9 preventing from browsing the Web

A few hours ago I've suddendly not been able to access any website anymore. It didn't matter if I used Safari, Firefox or Chrome. Also the Mac Appstore did not work. Connectivity was fine and Email, Skype, Chatter and many orher services still worked. I decided to restart my mac and this helped for a few minutes until I had the same issue again.

Using my iPad and google search I've found an article in the apple forums that is a few months old on the same issue described when using Sopos AV 9 for Mac and most people reported the issue solved after uninstalling Sophos AV:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5491011?start=0&tstart=0

So this is what I did and as soon as it was uninstalled all browsers worked without any issues (and obviously much faster than before). Has anyone else experienced similar issues and does Sophos have a solution for this? I would prefer to use Sophos AV, but until this issue is resolved this is not an option.

  • The only issue about web browsing stopping altogether is with Mac OS X 10.6 and Parental Control...

...which is actually due to a bug in Apple's code on 10.6 and hence we can't fix the issue for our users. :smileysad:

You don't say which OS version you have and SAV version?  If it's not 10.6 with Parantal Control, and you installed SAV for Mac v9 I'd recommend:

    1. Reinstalling SAV
    2. Rebooting.
    3. Checking the problem still exists.
    4. If it does: Open 'Preferences' from the shield icon, select the 'Web Protection' tab, and disable the top Web Protection option and try again.
    5. Repeat step four until you narrow down if web browsing is restored by disabling just one Web Protection option (and which one), or if both must be off to allow browsing.
