Software Update 3/3/14

Hi-Was there a Sophos software update this morning for Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition users? I got a software update message box this morning, but the update box did not say it was an update from Sophos. I clicked on it thinking that it would tell me what the update was, but it did not.  The update started and I did not see a way to stop the update.  However, when I moved the cursor over the Sophos icon on the upper right hand corner of my laptop it said that Sophos was updating the software and now that it is done it says that Sophos Anti-Virus was updated. I am fairly new to Sophos and concerned because  the software update message was not clearly defined.  If this was not a Sophos software update should I be concerned? If it was something threating that was downloaded would Sophos eliminate it?  and what action should I take if it wasn't Sophos and it was threateing? Thank you for your help.

  • Without seeing the same update notification that you saw it's difficult to tell.  To explain how regular (manual) Sophos updates are seen:

You click on the 'Update Now' option from the shield...

The Sophos AutoUpdate window checks with our servers...

Once complete summary information is shown...

An automatic update doesn't show anything on screen, but the Sophos shield icon in the menu bar does animate a downloading icon.  See the icons post...

If you saw an operating system update (on Mavericks/OS X 10.9) then it would look like this (in the top right corner of your screen)...

    ..which isn't connected to Sophos.

With Sophos' on-access scanner active (dark black S in the menu bar), and web protection enabled, you're well protected.  To check if any files on your computer are threats/malicious run a scan.  For more information getting started with Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac, including scanning your Mac, watch the video playlist...

If you see the pop-up alert again take a screenshot (Cmd + shift + 4 + spacebar - with all the keys pressed in that order now release them and click the window) and then post it.

    Hope that helps.
