Sophos 9 crashing and broken pipe (very slow web browsing)

PROBLEM - RESPONSE TIMES
I bought a Mac 3 months ago (iMac 27” 3,4 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 2048 MB video RAM and 3TB Fusiondrive). Recently I upgraded to Sophos 9 home edition and my response times when browsing have gone from almost instantaneous to very slow.

WHAT I HAVE DONE
I have tried uninstalling Sophos and reinstalling again. The same with Firefox. I am new to Mac (used DOS/Windows for 25 years) but I can manage to execute stuff via Terminal if necessary. I also ran a hardware test and no problems were found.

THE PROBLEM SEEMS NOT TO BE HERE
I have not noted any significant difference running other applications like Lightroom and Photoshop.

HELP
All hints to how I can get my quick system back when surfing are much appreciated.

    First I tried turning off the "block access to malicious websites..." which had little to no effect.

    Then I tried turning off the "block malicious downloads from websites..." which had an enormous effect. Without it on it is as fast as I remember with the speedtest.net being the sole exception I have encountered.

    I assume this is something that Sophos will continue bettering, so with time it will become faster and faster. I guess it is up to me now to decide having protection against obfuscated, polymorphic and zero day threats and slow down or not.

    Regarding the crash from the diagnostics - is there anyone at Sophos I can send them to? I assume it should not be that way and that they collect error reports.

    I will also try adding OpenDNS and if it turns out to have any performance influence (bad/good) then I will let you know.
