On access scanning is dimmed and won't restore default

I'm a brand new user but Sophos has worked OK for 3 months. Today on-access scanning is reported turned off. Following manual p. 6 I went to preferences, but after entering password, "on access " still dimmed. Restore default didn'r work reporting "preferences failed to set"

I upgraded to Mac Lion last week, could that be the reason?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

    Is this SAV 8 or 9?

    If you haven't tried a reboot do that.  Otherwise an OS upgrade may have changed "something somewhere" and a lot of digging is required.  Easier to uninstall it and then put it back on (IMO).
