I am new. It mentioned to look for the black shield; where will that be found?

The black shield should appear toward the right side of the menu bar. It should be black if Sophos on-access scanning is active, gray if it's turned off, and a moving arrow pointing down will show when it's in the process of updating. I've found that boot order may place the Sophos shield in the midst of other icons on the right but updating will usually move it to the left-most position of the group if it isn't there already.

Since the update process can be CPU intensive depending on what's being updated, and that can interfere with whatever else you're doing on the computer, if you click on that shield, you get a menu and one choice is to "Update Now." Doing that when you boot up can get the process out of the way before you move on to regular work.
